Setting Delay Volume
Installation Guide | 9 3
Setting Delay Volume
The delay volume is the volume of fluid in the path between the UV or UV/Vis
detector and the fraction collector drophead. The system is typically plumbed with a
fixed length of tubing and a defined set of detectors (such as the conductivity
monitor and pH detector) between the UV or UV/Vis detector and the fraction
collector. The length of tubing and the volume of the flow cells between the UV or
UV/Vis detector and the drophead define the delay volume. Setting the delay
volume causes the fraction collector to wait for the sample to travel from the UV or
UV/Vis detector to the drophead before it starts to collect sample fractions.
In order to accurately predict which fraction collector tube or outlet container
contains the peak of inter
est, you have to account for the time it takes for the
volume of fluid to travel from the UV or UV/Vis detector to the container. Because
the tubing length and flow cells between the detector and the fraction collector
drophead do not change often, you can set the delay volume when you install
ChromLab. You can change the delay volume when you change the tubing length or
add other detectors along the flow path.
For more information about delay volume and event markers, see the online help or
the NGC Chr
omatography Systems and ChromLab Software User Guide.
To set the delay volume
1. Click File > System Settings to open the System Settings dialog box.
2. Choose the Delay Volume tab.
